Cheaters Never Prosper? Not True if Adultery Website Ashley Madison has its way with China

without comments

ashley-madison-300x227There’s no question that China has many, many unfaithful spouses – especially among affluent white collar men who, in the process of coddling their mistresses, appear to be propping up housing bubbles in the big cities.

This epidemic of unfaithfulness has resulted in a steadily rising divorce rate (nearly 3 million last year, up almost 8% from 2011) and has not only triggered new rounds of public soul searching, but also attracted the attention of a few opportunists looking to cash in on China’s cheating spouses.

The most prominent player is Ashley Madison, a self-described “Married Dating Service” founded in North America by former sports attorney Noel Biderman. Boasting 20 million users and presence in 29 countries around the world Ashley Madison has had its sights set on Asia for some time. This past June it launched in Japan, where 75,000 users signed up in the first four days, and last month the site landed in Hong Kong*, where it has already amassed over 80,000 registered users, making the territory AshleyMadison’s most successful launch ever in terms of per capita penetration (no pun intended … well, maybe).

Now Biderman & Co. have their sights set firmly on the Mainland, where they expect an even bigger windfall. According to Businessinsider, over 640,000 people tried to access the site from within the Mainland – a statistic that has the company drooling at the financial prospects of facilitating China’s cheaters.

And for the past few weeks they seem to be ramping up their efforts to stir up interest by continually blasting select individuals and media organizations (like ours) with e-mails containing pictures of scantily clad lingerie models extolling recipients with their trademarked message “Life is short. Have an affair.”

Ashley Madison is probably correct in presuming an overwhelming demand here in China, where they appear to have no real competitors of note (?), but with the government’s anti-corruption campaign in full swing and public outrage over official sexual misconduct at a seemingly all-time high, they couldn’t have picked a more prickly time to start moving in.

Given the current political climate, the odds are against their ability to sustain such a business model – especially if they running ads like this.

Perhaps a better strategy would be to start a service like this.
